Provenance:
John Oakley Spencer, a Methodist missionary invited to Japan to instruct young Japanese men about Western ways. He went to Tokyo in 1882, where he became dean of the school that evolved into Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo. He stayed there until 1898 when he returned to the US and from there by descent to the former owner.
