Javanese Batik

Kain Sarung Batik Tulis
Lasem, Java
Cotton; hand drawn wax resist
1890-1915
104 x 195 cm (41 x 77 in)

A fabulous example of a tulis kain sarung, (lit. handwritten sarong), featuring Chinese style flowers in a monochrome red on a very-hard-toachieve white ground. Batik patterns tend to be divided into two parts, the badan (body) and kepala (head). This batik is especially collectable because the kepala is centered in the middle, creating a strong graphic design.
